What is Wildcard SSL?
Wildcard SSL Certificate is a type of SSL that secure all sub-domains along with root domain through a single issued certificate authority. This is a Normal SSL certificate that secures all subdomains of main domains.
Here, we are discussed below Pros and Cons of Wildcard SSL certificate.
Wildcard SSL Certificate Advantages
How this works?
If your website is example.com and you have enabled wildcard on your domain *.example.com then this will secure your http://www.example.com and it’s all Subdomains also.
For example,
blog.example.com
article.example.com
shop.example.com
mail.example.com
Wildcard SSL works on both shared IP and dedicated hosting. So, you don’t need to purchase additional IPs for each sub-domains SSL hosting.
Wildcard SSL certificate that supports latest and highest encryption algorithm SHA-2 algorithm makes more secure your website.
Wildcard SSL requires only domain authentication before buying this. Very easiest and fast authentication Wildcard SSL issuance and reissuance.
Ease of installations Wildcard SSL requires only one-time installations on one server after this you can share all that SSL configuration setting for multiple sub-domains on same server.
Wildcard SSL Certificate Limitations
Wildcard SSL Support only on First level domains of sub-domains. Like example – if wildcard issues for *.example.com so it supports only on blog.example.com, article.example.com, shop.example.com,
it doesn’t support on second level of sub-domains like abc.blog.exmple.com, pqr.blog.example.com.
If you want to secure multi-levels sub-domains so wildcard SSL certificate is not good options, you must go with Multi-domain wildcard SSL certificate that is also called SAN SSL certificate.
Functionality of wildcard SSL certificate is different from a conventional SSL certificate. But not all features that differ from a conventional SSL certificate. This is just an extension of SSL Certificate that protect your sub-domain along with main domain.
specify the certificate to all the subdomains before submitting the request. We need to add * in the sub-domain area.
Once you can add * and requesting certificate for *.example.com, this one domain can secure all the following domain,
blog.example.com
store.example.com
You can also install the same certificate on multiple servers for that, either copy private key on another server or reissue SSL as many times and install reissued certificate on another server.
Have a look at this example of a wildcard certificate – Facebook

Setup Process – Wildcard SSL Certificate?
Step #1 – Generate a Wildcard certificate using signing request (CSR)
You must create a certificate signing request (CSR). Before placing an order for your certificate.
While generating CSR for Wildcard certificate this will ask some questions like which domains do you want to protect. You must determine everything related to your domain.
Remember this don’t forget to add (*) to the main domains which you like to secure.
For example: *.example.com
Step #2 – Buy Wildcard SSL Certificate from Trusted Certificate Authorities (CA).
There are mainly two type of Wildcard Certificate user can buy: –
Domain Validation: Wildcard SSL certificates are the easiest way to secure. You can issue this certificate very easily withing 5 minutes without any time spend. This can secure your main domains as well as sub-domains.
Organization Validation: Wildcard SSL certificates are perfect for every type of business or organizations whether its small, medium or large. This Certificate is very much suited for large network, Cyber security websites, eCommerce platform. Organization Validation requires business related documents to verify your business or organizations identity along with domain ownership.
Once the service provider issues the SSL certificate based on your generated CSR then all sub-domains with an asterisk will be duly secured.
Example of Sub-domain secure: –
blog.example.com
Post.example.com
article.example.com
help.example.com
Step 3# – Installations
After you get CSR, you need to setup SSL and pass through domains approval process.
Once this process is done the certificate authority will send the certificate file which you need to install on the server.
Another thing with this certificate if you want to add more subdomains in future so you can add. They will be secured automatically. You don’t need to verify again and again.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.
Why do this?
The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.
To help you get started, here are a few questions:
You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.
Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.
When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
